The linked post is an events notification on the website “Climate Change Protests Australia” and is quite dated (October 2019). I came upon this page by accident while searching for a photo of people with their heads in the sand for my article, “Applied Logic”.
The pictured event is cited and described as, “To highlight the futility of the heads in sand approach, we will gather with as many people as possible on Manly beach (Ocean Side)” and further states, “On the beach, we will dig a hole in the sand big enough to be able to fit our heads in and still breath. At a coordinated time, everyone will simultaneously put their head in the sand for a given duration (1 min). In the background, Extinction Rebellion Banners are held”.
I have to give this protest a little credit, since it does not tie up traffic including ambulance traffic, blowing up pipelines, throwing soup at priceless paintings, painting the exterior of historic and commercial buildings, or having a funeral for nature again impeding traffic.
In the website’s “Why Protest” page, Extinction Rebellion claims that ‘peaceful’ protests are laudable, using as examples Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat to a white man (1956) and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech attended by 250,000 people (1963). The aforementioned civil rights and end-to-racism actions were certainly not in the manner exhibited by Extinction Rebellion and had substantially more significance and social value than ever put on display by “any” fanatical environmental protest.
You can read more about the radical Extinction Rebellion organization in my article “Hallam Away”.
