Idaho and Northern Ontario have a lot in common, and my potatoes are coming along even though it was a very late start! Ce'st la vie eh?

Hello Vesa: Many people in Timmins (or South Porcupine) don’t know (or have never thought of) that their part of Northern Ontario is actually a little farther south than any part of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, or British Columbia (except Vancouver Island) whose border with the USA is at the 49th parallel. While you are at about 48°25’, the weather is influenced substantially by James and Hudson Bay, and the Arctic Watershed, especially in the winters. While my part of Idaho is at 43°40’, about the same latitude as Toronto, we are also at 4900’ above sea level. Timmins, at its highest point, is only 900’ ASL. Potatoes undoubtedly grow about the same. My father had a masterful potato garden. Cheers!
