During a heavy thunderstorm-laden golf tournament in Spartanburg, South Carolina in June of 1982, professional golfer Lee Trevino, nicknamed “The Merry Mex”, held a one-iron golf club over his head claiming, “not even God can hit a 1-iron.” There was certainly an intent at humor here, but there is a modern-day truth in Trevino’s claim. I have not seen a 1-iron in a golf bag since the very early 1980s. In longer lower-trajectory clubs, hybrids reign supreme.
